Denbigh Asylum (aka North Wales Hospital) is a sight to behold. The huge complex is now a decaying Victorian ruin.

Constructed between 1844-1848, the hospital used to be the home to Welsh-speaking mental patients. Over the years it was in operation it expanded from housing just 200 patients, to almost 1500. In that time new wings and external buildings were added, until it reached its current size.

The hospital was in use until relatively recently in fact. Its doors closed for good in 1995 after 147 years of service.

As is the usual sad end to large buildings left to rot, the hospital has been vandalized and looted since its closing. The wet weather in Wales has only exacerbated the decay.

There were plans to demolish the historic building to make way for 280 new homes and businesses, but this never got underway.

In 2008 the buildings were featured in an episode of “Most Haunted”. There was also a fire that destroyed part of the main central building.

Today, the complex has become a popular destination for urban explorers. What will happen to the former hospital now is anyone’s guess.
